[Answered] Where are my subscribers and templates – and dozens of other questions after upgrading to Email Subscribers 4

This is Part 3 of our Email Subscribers 4 series.

This post is a collection of common questions and problems people reported after upgrading to version 4.

Lot of hardships and criticism, but we tackled it

As of this writing, we are at version 4.0.10 of the plugin. We made 9 releases from 1st March, 2019 to 15th March, 2019.

That’s almost one release every working day. And it wasn’t easy.

We have more than 150,000 users of the free plugin. After the upgrade and because of all the changes – we received a lot of hate emails, lots of complaints…even some threats.

The last three weeks were really hard for our small team. But I’m glad we’ve fixed all reported problems. We’re also making improvements, including some major enhancements coming in later part of this year.

We would also like to thank all our Email Subscribers community superheroes who supported us, showed their community spirit and helped others.

Here’s a quick list of problems we’ve solved as of 4.0.10

These issues cropped up on WordPress support forums, our live chat as well as our support emails. We have solved all of them.

But even if you’re not experiencing these problems, we recommend you upgrade to the latest version.

  1. Where are my Subscribers, Newsletters, Post Notifications & Templates?
  2. Emails not sending out immediately / Email Subscribers not sending notifications / email notifications don’t send / Post Notifications are not going to subscribers…
  3. Post Notifications don’t work with WP 5.0+ and ‘Classic Editor’
  4. Post Notifications failing on publishing without draft in WP 5.0+
  5. Post Notifications templates not available for selection
  6. Multiple post notifications issue
  7. Notifications not sent while republishing older posts
  8. Broken compatibility with Post SMTP and WP SES plugins.
  9. Forms are missing??
  10. Widget is missing / widget disappearing / Short description field missing in subscription widget??
  11. No Translations? Missing translation? German Translation gone…
  12. Missing localization files…
  13. Can’t see status of a subscriber – confirmed / subscribed / pending
  14. List not created even after success message / Can not delete a list / Can’t create or edit a list…
  15. Confirmation email are not going even if opt-in type set to Double Opt-in / Contacts not getting confirmation mail

The worst list?

Here are the most common questions/problems people had after upgrading to Email Subscribers 4.0 – with our answers.

  1. Where are my Subscribers, Newsletters, Post Notifications, Templates etc..?
  2. I fear that was the first question when people upgraded. We wrote about upcoming terminology changes in advance, but if you haven’t read it yet, please read this Email Subscribers plugin redesign – what you need to know. It will answer a lot of similar questions.
  3. Email Subscribers doesn’t send post notification as soon I publish a post or create a Broadcast (aka Newsletter)…
  4. This was another bummer. The reason is that we removed the “Send emails immediately” feature in ES 4.0. They are queued and sent in the background now. Read why Email Subscribers plugin no longer send emails immediately for the full story and a way to send emails immediately.
  5. Plugin doesn’t work with SMTP plugin like WP SES, WP MAIL SMTP, POST SMTP etc..
  6. This was clearly our fault. But we fixed it quickly and also confirmed it’s working with people who were facing this problem. You can use any of these plugins with Email Subscribers now.
  7. WP 5+ and Classic editor problems…
    Since WordPress introduced Gutenberg editor, the background processing of post publishing has changed. So things were not working as expected. We’ve already reported – what can be considered a “bug” in WordPress – to core WordPress team. But we also changed how we’re handling post notifications. We take care of different combinations now – WordPress versions, Gutenberg vs Classic editor, Categories defined or not… In short, it will work now!

Like I mentioned, we’ve already fixed all these problems. So please upgrade to the latest version of the plugin.

  1. Tough criticism for a free plug-in so I would like to start with a “Thank you so much” for putting this out and putting up with the sh-tstorm you apparently have recieved. However:
    I installed the latest update (Version: 4.0.12) and hoped things that went wrong in the March -19 update would be fixed.
    There seem to be a few more bugs to stamp out (or I may have misunderstood the process of) sending New Post notifications.

    I edited one of the two New Post Notification campaigns that existed in my WP.
    When I pressed “save” the name of the first campaign disappeared. I gawked at this for a while, and thinking I may have made some error in not filling in something I proceeded to edit the other campaign. The same result again.
    Now I had two campaigns with blank names and nowhere to edit the names. I tried to re-connect the campaign and the template but the dropdowns to choose templates from inside the campaign were now empty.
    I cannot connect the campaing with a template so now I seem to have two blank-name campaigns unconeccted with any template(s)??
    What gives?

      Thanks for your kind words. We appreciate it.

      Regarding your issue, templates are not visible in dropdown because template type is not set or mismatch. You can go to Email Subscribers > Campaigns > Manage Templates section and set template type as “Post Notification” whichever templates are belongs to post notification.

      Then, it should work as expected.
