How to switch between user accounts in WordPress

Switch between user accounts in WordPress with one click and return to your administrator session instantly using Switch User Login.

Switch User Login by Icegram allows administrators to log in as any user on their WordPress site with a single click. You never need to know, reset, or enter the user’s password.

When you finish testing or investigating an issue, you can return to your original administrator account immediately.

Installation and setup

Switch User Login requires zero initial configuration:

  1. In your WordPress admin dashboard, navigate to Plugins > Add New.

  2. Search for Switch User Login by Icegram.

  3. Click Install Now, then click Activate.

  4. The plugin is active immediately. There is no settings screen to configure.

How to switch to another user

You can switch to any registered account using either the user table or an individual user profile:

Method 1: From the users list

  1. Navigate to Users > All Users in your WordPress admin dashboard.

  2. Hover your mouse over the row of the user account you want to inspect.

  3. Click the Switch To link that appears in the row action links.

  4. WordPress refreshes instantly. You are now logged in as that user, with their specific dashboard menus, capabilities, and permissions.

Method 2: From the edit user profile screen

  1. In your WordPress admin dashboard, go to Users > All Users and click on a user’s name to edit their profile.

  2. Scroll down through their profile options to locate the Switch To action link.

  3. Click Switch To to log in as that user immediately.

How to switch back to your administrator account

While operating as another user, you can return to your original administrator session at any time without re-entering your admin password.

Use any of the following convenient switch-back locations:

  • Admin Toolbar: Look at the top WordPress admin bar. Hover over the user avatar or click the Switch back to [Your Admin Name] link.
  • Admin Notice: A persistent confirmation notice appears at the top of admin screens with a direct Switch back link.
  • Frontend Footer: If viewing the public frontend of your website, a discreet Switch back to [Your Admin Name] link is embedded in the page footer.
  • Meta Widget: If your site displays the default WordPress Meta sidebar widget, a switch-back link appears in the widget list.

Clicking any of these links terminates the switched session and restores your original administrator session instantly.
