Understanding cookie categories and visitor preferences
How Icegram Cookie Manager categorizes cookies into Necessary, Functional, Analytics, and Marketing groups for visitor consent.
Icegram Cookie Manager organizes your website’s cookies into four standard privacy categories. This classification enables granular consent: visitors can accept specific types of cookies while rejecting others.
When a visitor clicks Customize on the initial banner, a preference center modal opens with toggle controls for each non-essential category.
The four cookie categories
| Category | Purpose | Visitor Control | Common Examples |
|---|---|---|---|
| Necessary | Essential for website security and core functions. | Always active; cannot be toggled off. | WordPress session cookies and WooCommerce cart data. |
| Functional | Remembers user settings and accessibility options. | Optional toggle switch (disabled until opted in). | Embedded media players and saved UI themes. |
| Analytics & Performance | Measures site traffic and loading performance. | Optional toggle switch (disabled until opted in). | Google Analytics and performance monitors. |
| Marketing | Delivers targeted ads and measures campaign ROI. | Optional toggle switch (disabled until opted in). | Meta Pixel and Google Ads remarketing. |
How the preference center works
- Initial State: Before consent is given, all non-necessary categories are locked in a disabled state.
- Category Details: Visitors can view descriptions of each category inside the modal to understand why data is gathered.
- Saving Preferences: After toggling desired categories, clicking Save Preferences records the selection, applies the relevant scripts, and dismisses the popup.
Changing preferences with the re-open button
Privacy regulations require website owners to provide an easy way for visitors to withdraw or alter consent at any point during their visit.
Icegram Cookie Manager automatically displays a floating Cookie Settings icon (a discreet gear button) in the lower corner of the screen after the initial banner has been closed:
- Clicking the icon immediately brings back the preference center modal.
- Visitors can turn on or off any category and click Save Preferences to update their status.
- The new preferences take effect immediately for the active browsing session.
