How to enable Google Consent Mode v2

Integrate Google Consent Mode v2 with Icegram Cookie Manager to preserve analytics and ad measurement under privacy regulations.

Google Consent Mode v2 allows your website to adjust how Google tags (including Google Analytics 4, Google Ads, and Floodlight) behave based on visitor consent choices.

When enabled in Icegram Cookie Manager, the plugin communicates visitor consent choices directly to Google tags. If a visitor denies consent, Google tags automatically operate in cookieless ping mode to preserve aggregated modeling without storing personal tracking cookies.

The plugin maps Google’s four Consent Mode v2 parameters to its built-in consent categories:

Google Consent ParameterPlugin CategoryDefault StateUpdated State on Consent
analytics_storageAnalytics & Performancedeniedgranted when visitor accepts Analytics
ad_storageMarketingdeniedgranted when visitor accepts Marketing
ad_user_dataMarketingdeniedgranted when visitor accepts Marketing

  1. In your WordPress admin dashboard, go to Cookie Manager > Cookie Manager.

  2. Scroll down to the Advanced section.

  3. Find the Google Consent Mode v2 option and check the box to enable it.

  4. Click Save Settings.

You can confirm that Google Consent Mode v2 is operating properly using your web browser:

  1. Open an incognito browser window and navigate to your website.

  2. Open browser Developer Tools (press F12 or right-click and select Inspect), then click the Console tab.

  3. Type dataLayer and press Enter.

  4. Expand the printed array objects. You should see an entry for ['consent', 'default', {...}] with all four consent parameters set to denied.

  5. Click Accept All on the cookie banner.

  6. Inspect dataLayer again. A new ['consent', 'update', {...}] call should appear, indicating that the parameters have switched to granted.
